AI resume process (10 min) · 5 copy-paste prompts · ATS-friendly format rules · 3 mistakes to avoid · free template links.
The 4-step AI resume process
Step 1 — Brain dump (2 min)
Ek text file mein likho — fast, no formatting:
- Your name, phone, email, LinkedIn URL, city
- Job title aap apply kar rahe ho ka name
- Work experience: company, title, dates, 3-5 bullet points each (just facts, no fancy words)
- Education: degree, college, year, % or CGPA
- Skills: jo aap actually use karte ho
- Projects: 2-3, with what you did + outcome
- Optional: certifications, languages, awards
Step 2 — Master prompt (3 min)
Paste this in ChatGPT/Claude:
You are a senior recruiter at a top Indian company hiring for [target role]. I'll paste my background. Generate a 1-page ATS-friendly resume in plain text format with these sections in order: Header (name + contact), Professional Summary (3 lines max, role-targeted), Experience (X-Y-Z format bullets with metrics), Skills, Education, Projects (if any). Rules: - Indian English, no American expressions - Use action verbs at the start of every bullet (Built, Led, Reduced, Launched, Scaled) - Add metrics where reasonable (% improvements, ₹ amounts, time saved) - Keep total length under 350 words - Make it readable by ATS scanners — no tables, no fancy formatting - Highlight skills that match this job description: [paste JD if available] My background: """ [paste your brain dump here] """
Output milega. Read it carefully. AI exaggerate karta hai — make sure har claim true hai.
Step 3 — Polish bullets (3 min)
Har bullet point ke liye yeh prompt:
Rewrite this resume bullet using the X-Y-Z formula (Accomplished X, as measured by Y, by doing Z). Add a realistic metric. Indian English. Keep it under 20 words. Original bullet: "[paste]" Give me 3 versions varying intensity — neutral, strong, very strong.
Pick the one that's true, not the most exciting. Recruiters smell fake metrics in 5 seconds.
Step 4 — Format in Canva or Google Docs (3 min)
Take the plain text from ChatGPT, paste into:
- Canva — search "ATS resume" → pick a clean template → paste text → adjust fonts
- Google Docs — File → New from template → "Resume Serif" or "Modular"
- Microsoft Word — File → New → "Resume" templates
Export as PDF. Always PDF. Word docs get formatting destroyed by ATS.
5 ready-to-use prompts
Prompt #1 — Professional Summary
Write a 3-line professional summary for a [role] with [N years] experience in [industry]. My top 3 strengths: [list]. Write in confident first-person, Indian English, under 50 words. Make recruiter want to keep reading.
Prompt #2 — Tailor to a JD
Here's my generic resume: [paste]. Here's the job description: [paste JD]. Rewrite my resume to maximally match the JD. Don't lie or invent — just reorder, reword, and reframe what's true. Highlight the 5 keywords from the JD that I genuinely have.
Prompt #3 — Cover letter
Write a 3-paragraph cover letter for the role of [job title] at [company]. Use my background: [paste resume]. Tone: confident not desperate. 200 words. End with one specific next step. Indian English.
Prompt #4 — LinkedIn About section
Convert my resume into a LinkedIn About section. 220 words. First-person, scannable, story-style hook (not a job-title intro). Add 1-2 specific results. End with what I'm open to next.
Prompt #5 — Interview prep
Based on my resume [paste], generate the 7 most likely interview questions for [role] at [company]. For each: what they're really asking (the subtext), and a strong answer framework. Don't give me canned answers — give me how to think about each.
3 mistakes to avoid
1. Letting AI invent metrics
"Increased sales by 47%" — if you didn't actually do this, don't say it. AI will gladly fabricate. Recruiters call references and verify. Get caught once = career done.
2. Using AI clichés
AI loves words like "leveraged", "spearheaded", "synergized", "passionate about". Recruiters know AI when they see it. Replace with simple, specific verbs: "built", "led", "reduced".
3. Same resume for every job
The whole point of AI is speed. Make a fresh tailored version for every serious application. Use Prompt #2 above. Takes 2 minutes per role. Multiplies callback rate.
Free ATS-friendly templates
You don't need to pay for templates. These three are excellent and free:
- Google Docs — built-in resume templates
- Canva — search "ATS resume India"
- Overleaf — LaTeX templates if you want a polished engineering resume
Final tip — let AI critique your resume
Once your draft is done, paste it back into Claude with this prompt:
You are a hiring manager at a top Indian [tech/finance/marketing/whatever] company. Critique this resume harshly. List 5 specific weaknesses, 3 strengths, and 1 thing that would make you instantly reject it. Don't rewrite — just feedback. Resume: [paste]
Iterate based on the feedback. After 2-3 rounds, your resume is genuinely good — not just AI-good.
